The National Fuel Cell Research Center at the University of California, Irvine uses Reversible PEM fuel cell to store solar energy as hydrogen. Their research focuses on solar hydrogen for residential applications.

The Sun provides 6300 times more energy than current world
energy demand. As a source of energy for potential human use,
the Sun is expected to last 5 x 109 years as opposed to the
102 years projected for fossil fuel resources. Residential
electrical energy demand comprises 35% of U.S. electricity
demand. Current trends in the U.S. will lead to a larger share
of total electrical power generation being produced by coal
fired power plants. However, many U.S. ratepayers are demanding
cleaner power and are willing to pay higher electricity premiums
as a means of reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions
at the local level. Uncertainty in future CO2 emission regulation
also presents a risk for further dependence on coal power.
Power can be provided at the residential level in a clean
and sustainable manner via solar hydrogen production. Solar
photovoltaics (PV) can meet residential electrical demand
directly while excess PV power can be stored as hydrogen using
a reversible fuel cell (RFC).
The introduction of the reversible or regenerative fuel
cell provides a new component that is analogous to rechargeable
batteries and may serve well as a replacement for rechargeable
lead acid batteries when integrated with PV systems used in
residential applications. A RFC can operate in both fuel cell
(FC) mode to generate electricity and in electrolyzer (EZ)
mode to produce hydrogen and oxygen from water. The hydrogen
generated can then be stored to meet electrical demand at
the appropriate time or used as a multi-purpose fuel in other
applications such as cooking, heating, and transportation.
One of the inherent advantages of the RFC over batteries is
that energy storage can be decoupled from the energy conversion
device.
This comes from the ability to store hydrogen energy in
a tank, separately from the FC. Greater PV utilization is
possible with RFC s compared to batteries since, as long the
hydrogen tank is big enough, it can continue to store energy
whereas a PV array coupled to a battery bank usually goes
into float mode once it fully charges the battery. As more
energy storage capacity is needed, battery banks large enough
to capture the entire amount of available PV energy can become
very expensive. The longer term energy storage capability
of the RFC compared to batteries is particularly useful in
meeting energy demand over long winter periods in multifamily
applications.
Residential load demand from a single family home and solar
power production from a 5 kW PV array were measured. It was
found that PV power could be used to meet 33.6% of the residential
demand directly while 66.4% of the power would need to be
met by the utility grid or some type of energy storage device.
To better understand the RFC s response to the dynamics of
residential applications, experiments were conducted on both
an EZ coupled to a PV array and a FC connected to a hydrogen
tank and AC load. The goal of the study is to assess the response
of the EZ and the FC to dynamic power input and power demand,
respectively. Results showed that the EZ was able to produce
hydrogen from the PV array provided 750 W was available upon
start-up and 250 W was available upon shut-down. When PV availability
dipped below 250 W for over 10 minutes the EZ was unable to
maintain its system pressure and would shut down.
The FC system studied functioned in parallel with a battery
bank; as such it is a hybrid energy storage device. The FC
operated as a base-load device and battery charger, while
the battery operated to meet highly dynamic load demand. In
this configuration, the FC system was able to ramp at very
fast power rates up to 842 W/s, indicating that meeting the
max rate of 857 W/s seen in the residence is feasible. Energy
density of the FC system was limited to both stored hydrogen
capacity and by a minimum FC system operational voltage of
41.5 V.
In order to assess the annual energy storage capacity of
the RFC a correlation was made between EZ hydrogen production
and annual local solar irradiance. It was found that yearly
residential energy needs (assuming 15.5 kWh/day demand) can
be met in terms of raw H2 energy produced annually from a
5 kW PV array. Assuming all H2 can be stored, a 40% efficient
fuel cell can meet 40% of residential demand. Since 66.4%
of the energy demand needs to be met by energy storage, either
a larger PV array or a more efficient fuel cell is needed
to successfully power the home through an annual cycle in
a stand-alone configuration.
Solar hydrogen powered homes were shown to be technically
feasible but many advances such as better system integration,
controls, power electronics standardization, fuel cell lifetime,
and price reduction will need to materialize before solar
hydrogen systems become viable options in the current residential
power marketplace. |
