About 1.400 participants attended this year's Fuel Cell Seminar in Palm Springs, CA, United States, so, the official attendance numbers released from Courtesy Associates from Washington, DC, the organizers of the event. A "tight" program was offered: within three days there have been six short courses each with a duration of four to eight hours, lectures of 114 international speakers, two panel discussions in the exhibition area and the presentation of the 2009 Fuel Cell Seminar Award to representatives of progressive companies like General Motors (new or old?) and Honda Motor, Co. The ceremony of the Dr. Bernard S. Baker Student Award for Fuel Cell Research made the show complete.

Based on a survey from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA)- Federal Motor Transport Authority, Flensburg, Germany exactly 22 .330 hybrid vehicles were registered at the beginning 2009 in Germany. A total of 41.321.171 cars are registered in Germany, of which 1.452 are powered with electric drive. This corresponds to 0.054 percent (hybrid), or 0.0035 per cent (electrical) of the total car stock in Germany. It is indeed still a long way to achieve the ambitious goal of the planned economy (former) German Federal Government: "... to have one million electric cars on the road by 2020..." (quote by the former Minister for Economic Affairs, Freiherr zu Guttenberg). The goal is legal: fuel savings and the avoidance of pollutant emissions. The road to get there may be pursued differently.

In Spain, the region of Andalusia offers not only an impressive legacy of monuments, fashionable beach-places and Europe's largest concentration of well-watered golf courses, but also demonstrates technical progress in research and use of solar energy. Here I can recommend a trip to the Plataforma Solar de Almeria (PSA) and to Andasol 1 to 3, Europe's first parabolic trough power plants and currently the largest solar power plants in the world. Both are located between Granada and Almeria - only 60 km apart from each other.

The year 2008 was the most successful one for renewable energy (RE). In only one year, grid-connected solar PV capacity rose six fold to 13 GW, wind power capacity increased by 250% to 121 GW, solar hot water by 15 %. Heat and electricity from biomass and geothermal energy continue to grow, small hydro increased by 8%. That was reported by Eric Martinot and Janet Sawin in the Renewables Global Status Report 2009 Update, (see link below). Hydrogen is not mentioned in this study, especially since hydrogen is not even generated sustainable at this time.

They achieved the first flight of mankind in an airplane, which was "heavier than air," and controlled by a human hand, powered by an internal combustion engine. This flight on December 17, 1903 lasted a short 12 seconds and covered a distance of 120 ft (36.6 m).

More than two dozen of the 200 oral and poster presentations on the topic "Concentrating Solar Power and Chemical Energy Systems" at the International Congress SolarPACES in September 2009 in Berlin, Germany, were devoted to solar hydrogen production. This included not only technical presentations, but also contributions to policy and marketing issues for the more than 700 international attendees.

From August 2003 to August 2009, thus within six years, my FAIR-PR team and I have attended 100 international hydrogen and fuel cells (H2FC) conferences and similar events in 24 countries, of which 22 took place in the U.S. and 13 in China respectively.

On the traditional German railway site Kirchmöser in Brandenburg / Havel, one of the most modern centre of excellence for rail technology will be established. Dr. Ruediger Grube, CEO of Deutsche Bahn and representatives of nine industrial groups as well as two research intitutions confirmed this move in mid-August 2009 at a launch event for the DB Eco Rail Center.

Today I would like to familiarize you with a perhaps not so well known success story: The U.S. company Apple Inc., with headquarter in Cupertino, CA, scored a turnover of $ 8.34 billion in the 2nd Quarter 2009 and a quarterly net profit of $ 1.23 billion or $ 1.35 per share respectively. In the 1970s Apple belonged to the first manufacturers of personal computers. It also took a pioneering role in the commercial introduction of the graphical user interface and the mouse in the 1980s. With the advent of iPods and iPhones in 2001 and 2007 Apple expanded its core business.

Intersolar North America 2009 has tripled its floor space, featuring 437 exhibitors and 17,000 registered trade show visitors in San Francisco’s Moscone Center West, July 14-16. The conference, held at the InterContinental Hotel next door, also increased its size and program to over 25 tracks, approx. 150 conference speakers and around 1,600 attendees.

A press release published by the German Energy Agency GmbH (dena) in June 2009, contained an analysis about German media coverage on the topic of mobility. Thereafter, the energy-efficient mobility in the German daily press is significantly underrepresented. Only 40 percent of the articles on individual car models will be referred to the fuel consumption.

The European FUEL CELL FORUM 2009 took place in early July in Lucerne, Switzerland. As in previous years, it was successfully organized by Dr. Ulf Bossel `s European Fuel Cell Forum. The approx. 150 international conference attendees were able to listen to 82 oral Presentations and to see 52 Poster Presentations on "Fundamentals, Materials, Systems and Applications". For me, it was interesting to follow the presentation of Dr. Karl Föger - Chief Technology Officer of the company Ceramic Fuel Cells Limited., (CFCL), based in Noble Park, Australia. Also during the poster session, I could learn a lot. A fuel cell-powered bike in the practical application was presented by Dipl-.Ing. Jörg Weigl from University Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, in Lucerne.

There was much noise in the German media in mid-June 2009 regarding a „new“ idea for „renewable“ energies. The leading German paper , FAZ, headline was: " From Africa's sun to German outlets". 20 companies, including RWE, Eon, Schott, Siemens and the Deutsche Bank under the umbrella of Munich Re AG, anounced the so-called DESERTEC concept.

The Hydrogen + Fuel Cells International Conference + Exhibition in Vancouver, BC, Canada, was our 97th international H2/FC conferences which we attended since 2003. On the margins of this conference there was also a technical tour with approx. 40 participants. For me it was good to attend the Technical Tour, there was much to learn. We visited the AFCC Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation and Power Tech, a subsidiary of BC Hydro, the local electricity provider.

"The electrification of vehicles is a key to sustainable and individual mobility of the future ..." (Original: Daimler AG). This is said and believed by many. In the "fine-print" will be promised somewhere later a: "... locally emission-free ..." (Original: BMW AG) mobility. But what does this mean? You need either electricity in order to charge batteries in vehicles (plug-in hybrid or all electric vehicles), or hydrogen, to transform it to electricity in vehicles (FC) or to burn it (H2ICE).

Great was the excitement in the international hydrogen and fuel cell community, as the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) published its budget estimates for fiscal year (FY) 2010 in early May 2009. The plans foresee dramatic reductions in hydrogen and fuel cell programs. The National Hydrogen Association (NHA) and the U.S. Fuel Cell Council (USFCC), both from Washington, DC, released their criticism of this budget planning in a joint statement immediately. These two organizations represent more than 200 mostly US American hydrogen and fuel cell companies and organizations.

In the past week, U.S. President Barack Obama, upgraded the automobile industry to "chief cause" by promising the stumbeling car maker Chrysler governmental support for an alliance with Italian Fiat. I am not quite sure, whether it is good to know that we can now also consider the automotive industry, after banks, to be understood as „inhernet to the system“. The U.S. President also held - at the end of April – a speech at the Annual Meeting of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC. Because of the importance of his remarks, we report excerpts. One thing I can already anticipate: hydrogen and fuel cells were not mentioned.

Nowadays it is possible to participate at hydrogen and fuel cell conferences, without setting the foot out of the (office) door. Last week, we attended the NHA (National Hydrogen Association) Conference and Hydrogen Expo live and online. "In reality," the conference was taking place with the subtitle: "Celebrating 20 years of the hydrogen Growing Industry" in early April in Columbia, South Carolina, USA.

During the past three years we attended 45 and hydrogen and fuel cell conferences and trade fairs in 17 countries. Furthermore we are also looking for current H2/FC-highlights to visit. Among others, we did our research at the Morley bus depot in Perth, Australia, where from 2004 to 2007 three hydrogen driven buses ( "100% steam, 100% clean!") were on the road. We saw also the hydrogen fueling station (with dog-washing facilities...) in North Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Most of what is called "environmentally friendly hydrogen technology", is currently coming from fossil fuels, mainly produced by reforming of natural gas. This hydrogen is not at all CO2 free, and certainly not renewable. Nevertheless, many (from media, politics and administration) are creating the impression that everything that is converted in a fuel cell into electricity (and heat and water) is: "100 percent clean, 100 percent steam".

On 22 December 2008, the rupture of an internal dam at a coal-fired power plant near Kingston in Tennessee / USA gave way to some four billion liters of fly ash to destroy twelve houses. Approximately 160 hectares of land were overflooded. A large part of the ash emerged into Emory River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, which for many people is used for water supply in that area.

By 2030, it could fall by half. Due to the rising energy consumption of the oil-producing countries, the supply on the world‘s market will also be reduced.

Huge was the euphoria in the media, when BMW's Board member Norbert Reithofer and Tuomo Hatakka, CEO of Vattenfall, started a "remarkable project“ in Berlin. What was all the fuss about? The two „forerunners“ introduced one of 50 recharging points, which will supply 50 electric Mini cars with electricity sometime in the future.

Almost weekly there are themed events, such as the ones in Stuttgart, Copenhagen, Hamburg or Phoenix, Arizona, USA. But there are other memorable events too, such as the 16th Millionaire Fair "Millionaire Fair ®" which took place October 16 -- 19 in the "million-strong city" Munich, Germany.

At INTELEC, an annual conference on telecommunications energy systems, the latest developments in backup power are presented and analyzed. This years conference in San Diego was attended by nearly 600 power-experts from 35 countries. Almost half of them came, naturally, from the USA, Canada was represented by 53 participants [Japan: 35, Sweden: 34, Australia: 17, Germany: 16 (that's (at least) something!)]

Formular 1 Races and the environment are two things, which are difficult to combine. With Formula Zero, a new zero-emission race class for hydrogen and fuel cells vehicles, it is different. At the end of August 2008, the first international race of this series took place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The Dutch team "Green Choice ForZe" from the Technical University of Delft won the long distance race and won the coveted zeroth place. The Spanish team "EuplatecH2" from the University of Zaragoza Eupla won the sprint competition with the fastest racing round.

That 35 locomotives cannot fly is a globally accepted fact. A locomotive from the coal mining industry in Canada, for example, weighs 16 tons. Thirty-five of such locomotives creates a mass of 560 tons (560,000 kg). Amazingly, these 560 tons are equal to the maximum take-off weight of an Airbus A380, currently the world's largest passenger aircraft from the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus. The company trades today as: "Airbus, an EADS Company." In the end, the 560 tons will in fact fly. It is "only" a question of molecular arrangement…

In these months, in summer 2008, the number of registerd mobile phones (in German also mistakenly nicknamed: "Haendies" ), exceed 3.3 billion, which means over half of the world`s population has now statistically a registered wireless mobile phone. Congratulations to all involved in this process! How could this so quickly, within about 25 years, happen? Especially if you consider, that in 2007 alone over 1.15 billion new units have been sold. And that a normal mobile phone in the mid-eighties in Germany was having the same value and the same price as a Porsche sports car at that time, namely around 12.000 euro (approx US Dollar 19.000) - which was then around 24.000 Deutschmarks.

The German federal government is having a hard time in summer 2008, to evaluate the difficult question, how to find workable compromises in the future taxation of motor vehicles. It will in future no longer be based on engine capacity, but on emissions of carbon dioxide, that means on consumption.

Parallel to this year's annual conference of the US National Hydrogen Association in early April, another event, held in Washington, DC, received in the German media little or no attention: The hearing of representatives of the five largest US-American oil companies - Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Chevron and ConocoPhilips before the “House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming" of the American Congress. In 2007 these five companies achieved a combined profit of US $ 123.3 billion, equivalent to 8.4% of their total turnover of nearly US $ 1,500 billion. At the time of the hearing the price of oil (light, sweet, crude) quoated US $ 100.98 per barrel.

Among the renewable energy sources, apart from water and wind power a variety of other renewable energies. are used in Germany in 2007. The usage of renewable energies has increased, compared to the previous year by over 15% to 31.4 million tons SKE. Their share in the primary energy consumption rose from 5.54% to 6,6 %. In the total consumption of renewable energies, the biomass in their Different manifestations was involved with three-quarters in 2007. Especially important was the use of biomass for electricity and heat supply, with a share of 17%. The proportion of wind energy amounted to 15.4%, that of hydropower around 8%.

Mostly, except for the imprint "Made in China", they carry nothing more than little green or red LED lamps which shine when network-connection is available. When in use, they get warm. Das Jahr 2008 war für erneuerbare Energien (eE) das bisher erfolgreichste. In nur einem Jahr stieg die netzgekoppelte Solar-PV-Kapazität um das Sechsfache auf 13 GW; Windkraftkapazität um 250 % auf 121 GW, Solar-Warmwasser erhöhte sich um 15 %. Wärme und Strom aus Biomasse und Erdwärme wachsen weiter, kleine Wasserkraftwerke erhöhten sich um 8 %.

Vor 106 Jahren gelang den Gebrüdern Wright mit ihrem "Flyer", einer "fliegender Kiste", der erste Flug der Menschheit in einem Flugzeug, das "schwerer als Luft", von menschlicher Hand gesteuert und durch einen Verbrennungs-Motor angetrieben war. In einer Pressemitteilung veröffentlichte die Deutsche Energie−Agentur GmbH (dena) im Juni 2009 eine Stellungnahme zur Berichterstattung in deutschen Medien zum Thema Mobilität. Danach sei die energieeffiziente Mobilität in der deutschen Tagespresse deutlich unterrepräsentiert. Nur bei 40 Prozent der Besprechungen einzelner Pkw−Modelle wird der Spritverbrauch genannt.

Das European FUEL CELL FORUM 2009 fand Anfang Juli in Luzern statt. Wie in den Vorjahren wurde es von Dr. Ulf Bossel`s European Fuel Cell Forum erfolgreich organisiert. Die rund 150 internationalen Kongress−Teilnehmer konnten sich anhand von 82 oral Presentations und 52 Poster−Presentations über "Fundamentals, Materials, Systems and Applications" informieren. Für mich interessant waren die Ausführungen von Dr. Karl Föger, Chief Technology Officer der Firma Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. (CFCL), mit Sitz in Noble Park, Australien. Auch während der Poster−Session konnte ich viel lernen. Ein brennstoffzellen−getriebenes Fahrad im praktischen Einsatz präsentierte in Luzern Dipl−.Ing. Jörg Weigl von der University Teknologi Malysia in Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia .

Groß war das Rauschen im deutschen Blätterwald Mitte Juni 2009. Die FAZ titelte: "Afrikas Sonne in die deutschen Steckdosen". 20 Konzerne, darunter RWE, Eon, Schott, Siemens und die Deutsche Bank planen danach unter der Führung der Münchener Rück AG, das sogenannte DESERTEC−Konzept. In Nordafrika solarthermisch erzeugter Strom (unsere Grafik), soll über HGÜ (Hochspannungs−Gleichstrom− Übertragungs)−Fernleitungen nach Europa transferiert werden und damit "...eine Perspektive für nachhaltige Stromversorgung für die EUMENA−Region (Europe, the Middle East and North Africa) bis zum Jahr 2050 bieten...".

Die Hydrogen + Fuel Cells International Conference + Exhibition in Vancouver, BC, Kanada, war unser 97. internationaler H2/FC Konferenzen−Besuch seit 2003. Am Rande dieser Konferenz gab es auch eine Technical Tour mit rund 40 Teilnehmern. Für mich war es gut, dabei zu sein − es gab viel zu lernen. Es ging zur AFCC Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation sowie zu Powertech, einer Tochterfirma von BC Hydro, des ortsansässigen Stromversorgers.

"Die Elektrifizierung von Fahrzeugen ist ein Schlüssel für die nachhaltige und individuelle Mobilität der Zukunft ..." (Originalton: Daimler AG). So behaupten und glauben es Viele. Im "Kleingedruckten" wird dann irgendwo später eine: "... lokal emissionsfreie ..." (Originalton: BMW AG) Mobilität versprochen. Aber was bedeutet das? Man benötigt entweder Strom, um damit Batterien in Fahrzeugen aufzuladen (plug−in hybrid oder all electric vehicles) oder Wasserstoff, um diesen in Fahrzeugen zu verstromen (FC) oder zu verbrennen (H2ICE). Woher sollen die Energieträger langfristig kommen? Wichtig ist es mir, Batterie− und Wasserstofffahrzeuge als sinnvolle und notwendige Ergänzung für zukunftsfähige Mobilitätslösungen zu verstehen.

Ergänzend zu meinem Energiegedanken Nr. 35 in diesem Newsletter vom 12.05.2009 gibt es Neues vom Potomac River zu vermelden: Der ehemalige Brennstoffzellen−Executive von General Motors (GM), J. Byron McCormick, hat jetzt seinen Rücktritt aus dem Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technical Advisory Committee (HTAC) des Department of Energy (DOE) erklärt. Damit will McCormick seinen Protest über die geplanten Budget−Kürzungen bei Wasserstoff− und Brennstoffzellen−Programmen durch den US−amerikanischen Energieminister (DOE−Secretary) Nobelpreisträger Steven Chu Ausdruck verleihen.

Groß war die Aufregung in der internationalen Wasserstoff− und Brennstoffzellen−Gemeinschaft, als das US−Department of Energy (DOE) Anfang Mai dieses Jahres seine Budget−Ansätze für das Geschäftsjahr (FY) 2010 veröffentlichte. Die Planungen sehen drastische Kürzungen bei Wasserstoff− und Brennstoffzellen−Förderprogrammen vor. Die National Hydrogen Association (NHA) und das US Fuel Cell Council (USFCC), beide aus Washington, DC, äußerten in einer gemeinsamen Erklärung unverzüglich ihre Kritik an diesen Budgetplanungen. Diese beiden Verbände repräsentieren zusammen mehr als 200 meist US−amerikanische Wasserstoff und Brennstoffzellen−Unternehmen und −Organisationen.

In der vergangenen Woche machte US−Präsident Barack Obama die Automobilindustrie zur "Chefsache", indem er dem strauchelnden Autobauer Chrysler staatliche Unterstützung für eine Allianz mit Fiat in Aussicht stellte. Es ist gut zu wissen, dass wir jetzt auch diese Branche, nach Banken, auch als systemimanent zu verstehen haben. Der US−Präsident hielt – ebenfalls Ende April – eine von den deutschen Medien wenig beachtete Rede auf dem Annual Meeting der National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC. Wegen der Wichtigkeit seiner Ausführungen berichten wir in Auszügen darüber. Eines kann ich hier schon vorwegnehmen: Wasserstoff und Brennstoffzellen kamen nicht vor.

Heutzutage kann man an Wasserstoff− und Brennstoffzellen−Konferenzen teilnehmen, ohne den Fuss vor die (Büro−)Tür zu setzen. Wir waren in der vergangenen Woche bei der NHA (National Hydrogen Association) Conference and Hydrogen Expo online live dabei. "In echt" fand die Konferenz mit dem stimmigen Untertitel: "Celebrating 20 years of Growing the Hydrogen Industry" Anfang April 2009 in Columbia, South Carolina, statt.

Bei unseren weltweiten Konferenzbesuchen, die uns in den vergangenen drei Jahren zu 45 Wasserstoff und Brennstoffzellen−Konferenzen beziehungsweise −Messen in 17 Ländern geführt haben, versuchen wir auch immer, aktuelle H2/FC−Highlights zu besuchen. So recherchierten wir auf dem Morley Busdepot in Perth, Australien, wo von 2004 bis 2007 drei mit Wasserstoff getriebene ("100 % steam, 100 % clean!") Busse fuhren. Wir sahen auch die Wasserstoff−Tankstelle (mit Hunde−Wasch−Anlage!) in North Vancouver, BC, Kanada.

Das war 1979 (und im Vergleich ist bis heute viel geschehen): Pink Floyd veröffentlichte sein Album "The Wall", der Schah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi verließ den Iran, ein Barrel Öl kostete Ende des Jahres 24 US−Dollar, und das United States Department of Energy (DOE) kündigte Zahlungen von fünf US−Dollar pro Barrel für Heizölverbraucher an.

Das meiste, was heute als "umweltfreundliche Wasserstofftechnologie" bezeichnet wird, kommt zurzeit aus fossilen Energieträgern, hauptsächlich erzeugt durch die Reformierung von Erdgas. Dieser Wasserstoff ist keinesfalls CO2 frei und schon gar nicht erneuerbar.

Am 22. Dezember 2008, führte der Bruch eines internen Staudammes dazu, dass etwa vier Milliarden Liter Flugasche aus dem Kohlekraftwerk Kingston in Tennessee/USA zwölf Häuser zerstörten und rund 160 Hektar Land überfluteten. Ein Großteil der Asche gelangte in den Emory River, einen Zufluss des Tennessee River, der für viele Menschen die Wasserversorgung gewährleistet.

"...'Peak Oil ist jetzt!' Die weltweite Erdölförderung hat mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit das Maximum bereits überschritten. Bis zum Jahr 2030 könnte sie auf die Hälfte sinken. Aufgrund des steigenden Eigenverbrauchs der Ölförderländer wird sich das Angebot auf dem Weltmarkt zusätzlich verknappen.

Groß war die Euphorie in den Medien, als BMW−Vorstand Norbert Reithofer und Vattenfallchef Tuomo Hatakka in diesen Tagen in Berlin ein "bemerkenswertes Projekt" starteten. Worüber die Aufregung? Die beiden Vorläufer stellten eine von 50 in Berlin aufzustellenden Stromsäulen vor, die in Zukunft 50 BMW Mini E−Testfahrzeuge mit Strom versorgen sollen.

Im Herbst eines Jahres nimmt die gefühlte Dichte von Wasserstoff- und Brennstoffzellen-Konferenzen bzw. Messen spürbar zu. Quasi im "Wochentakt" gibt es themenbezogene Veranstaltungen, so z.B. in Stuttgart, Kopenhagen, Hamburg oder Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Aber es gibt auch andere denkwürdige "Events", wie z.B. die 16. Millionärsmesse "Millionaire fair®" die vom 16.-19. Oktober 2008 im Millionendorf München stattfand.

Die INTELEC ist eine jährliche Konferenz, auf der die neuesten Entwicklungen für Telekommunikation Energie-Systeme für die Notstromversorgung vorgestellt und analysiert werden. An der diesjährigen Konferenz in San Diego, CA, USA, vom 14. bis 18. September nahmen fast 600 Backup-Power-Experten aus 35 Ländern teil. Davon naturgemäß fast die Hälfte aus den USA, Kanada war mit 53 Kongress- Teilnehmern vertreten [Japan: 35, Schweden: 34, Australien: 17, Deutschland: 16 (immerhin!)]

Motorsport und Umweltschutz sind Dinge, die sich nur schwer miteinander vereinbaren lassen. Anders bei Formula Zero, einer neue "Rennklasse" speziell für Brennstoffzellen−Fahrzeuge. Ende August 2008 fand im niederländischen Rotterdam das erste Rennen dieser Serie statt. Das niederländische Team "Greenchoice Forze" von der Technischen Universität Delft gewann das Langstreckenrennen und erreichte damit den begehrten nullten Platz. Das spanische Team "EuplatecH2" von der Eupla Universität in Saragossa setzte sich im Sprint−Wettbewerb mit der schnellsten Rennrunde durch.

Neuesten Meldungen zufolge wird jetzt auch Suchmaschinen−Weltmarktführer Google grün. Wenn das so weitergeht, kann es zur Methode werden. Aber derReihe nach: Nach anfänglichem Rumoren in der Szene zum Engagement von Google in erneuerbare Energien kam am 18. August 2008 die Meldung: "Google investiert 10 Millionen in Erneuerbare Energien!"

China präsentierte sich mit einer spektakulären Olympia−Show bei der Eröffnung der 29. Olympischen Sommerspiele in Peking, einer Stadt mit 15 Millionen Menschen. Eine gute Gelegenheit, der Welt zu zeigen, was heute mit erneuerbaren Energien machbar ist. Man ist immer wieder fasziniert von der ungeheuren Vielfalt dieses Landes, sei es bei einem ersten Besuch oder bei einem längeren Aufenthalt dort. Die beeindruckende Multimedia−Show bei der Eröffnungsfeier mit 15 000 Artisten und 30 000 Komparsen, die weit mehr als Kleindarsteller waren, machte Hoffnung auf "große Anwendungen" von erneuerbaren Energien bei der Olympiade, diese blieben allerdings leider aus.

WREC (2008: 19.−25. Juli, Glasgow, Schottland, UK) ist ein internationaler Kongress mit Teilnehmern aus mehr als 100 Ländern. Die Veranstaltung, organisiert vom World Renewable Energy Network, hat eine begleitende Ausstellung. Der Kongress findet alle zwei Jahre statt. Ein wichtiges Ereignis für Alle, die sich für die Versorgung und Verteilung, den Verbrauch und die Entwicklung von erneuerbaren Energiequellen interessieren und auf diesen Gebieten forschen. Der Kongress bietet die einmalige Gelegenheit, in wenigen Tagen viel über die neuesten Entwicklungen in diesem sich rasch verändernden Thema zu erfahren.

Dass 35 Lokomotiven nicht fliegen können, ist eine weltweit anerkannte Tatsache. Eine Lokomotive aus dem Kohlebergbau in Kanada wiegt in unserem Beispiel 16 Tonnen, 35 solcher Lokomotiven ergeben eine Masse von 560 t (560 000 kg). Erstaunlicherweise entsprechen diese 560 t genau dem max. Abfluggewicht eines Airbus A380, dem derzeit weltweit größten Passagierflugzeug des europäischen Flugzeugherstellers Airbus. Das Unternehmen firmiert heute unter: "Airbus, an EADS Company". Also fliegen am Ende die 560t doch. Es ist eben alles "nur" ein Frage der Molekular−Anordnung.

In diesen Monaten wird die Anzahl der genutzten Mobiltelefone, (in Deutsch auch irrtümlicherweise "Händies" genannt), 3,3 Milliarden überschreiten, das heißt über die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung verfügt jetzt statistisch über ein angemeldetes Händy. Herzlichen Glückwunsch dazu an alle Beteiligten. Wie konnte das so schnell, innerhalb von etwa 25 Jahren, passieren?

Unsere Bundesregierung tut sich derzeit unter anderem auch bei der Frage schwer, tragfähige Kompromisse bei der zukünftigen Besteuerung von Kraftfahrzeugen zu finden. Sie soll sich in Zukunft nicht mehr am Hubraum orientieren, sondern am Ausstoß von Kohlendioxid, also am Verbrauch.

Parallel zur diesjährigen Jahreskonferenz der US−National Hydrogen Association Anfang April dies Jahres, fand in Washington, DC, eine weitere Veranstaltung statt, die in den deutschen Medien kaum oder keine Beachtung fand: die Anhörung von Vertretern der fünf größten amerikanischen Ölgesellschaften − ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Chevron und ConocoPhilips vor dem "House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming" des amerikanischen Kongresses.

"Erneuerbare Energien" heißt es laut Arbeitsgemeinschaft Energiebilanzen am Ende der 30−seitigen Studie unter anderem: "...Zu den erneuerbaren Energieträgern zählt neben Wasser− und Windkraft eine Vielfalt weiterer erneuerbaren Energien." [...] "Der Verbrauch aller erneuerbaren Energieträger nahm im Jahr 2007 gegenüber dem Vorjahr um gut 15 Prozent auf 31,4 Mio. t. SKE zu, wobei sich deren Anteil am Primärenergieverbrauch von 5,54 Proeznt im Jahr 2006 auf 6,6 Prozent im Jahr 2007 erhöht hat.
