My thoughts about the different usages of hydrogen:
During my recent visit of the first and only Nuclear Power Plant in the Philippines, I saw another unknown but well-used application of hydrogen, which is since 1930s, nothing else than a technical gas.

Bataan Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear power plant, completed but never fueled, 100 kilometers (62 mi) west of Manila in the Philippines.

Construction on the Nuclear Power Plant began in 1976. Equipped with a Westinghouse light water reactor, it was designed to produce 621MWe, the Reactor rating was 1.876 MWth. It was the Philippines' only attempt at building a nuclear power plant.

The Westinghouse Generator was a hydrogen-cooled turbogenerator with gaseous hydrogen as a coolant, designed to provide a low-drag atmosphere and cooling for single-shaft applications in combination with steam turbines.

In most cases, the hydrogen was made on-site at the plant with the good old Atmospheric Alkaline Electrolysers.

Because of the high thermal conductivity and other favorable properties of hydrogen gas; this is the most common type in its field even today.

Hydrogen's low density, high specific heat/thermal conductivity, make it a coolant for this application. This all has nothing to do with hydrogen as an energy carrier at all.
