"Hydrogen + Fuel Cells on their way to commercialisation"
Dr. Seok Yeol Yoon
CTO and Executive Vice President
Samsung
SDI Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea
Samsung SDI Company Information:
Through impressive technological advancements Samsung
SDI, a top-tier display and energy maker, maintains its position
as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of PDPs
(Plasma Display Panels), OLEDs (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes),
mobile phone LCDs, CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes) and rechargeable
batteries.
The company’s achievements were truly wide-ranging.
First Samsung SDI put in place the world’s first PDP
mass-production line applying 4-panel technology which enabled
the company to produce four 50-inch panels from one mother
glass at the same time. They also developed the world’s
largest 102-inch Full HD PDP. Beyond PDPs, Samsung SDI unveiled
a new concept of slim CRT called Vixlim; the world’s
highest resolution AM (Active Matirx) OLED for high-end mobile
phones; and the world’s largest 17” OLED with
low-molecular LTPS type for monitors and TVs. In the field
of energy, the company also succeeded in producing the world’s
highest capacity lithium-ion battery for notebooks.
For the visions, Samsung SDI has a concrete plan to concentrate
on fostering next generation display, such as FED (Field Emission
Display), Flexible Display, 3D Display, and next generation
battery, such as Fuel Cell and Solar Cell as new future business
items for the company, creating the future for display &
energy.
SDI has developed the mobile fuel cell in earnest since 2000.
Starting with Mobile Fuel Cell, SDI will expand the business
to Stationary and Automobile area in the near future. The
vision of SDI on energy business is a total mobile energy
provider.

Abstact Future Prospect of Mobile Fuel Cell
“Digital Convergence and Ubiquitousness” are the
recent emerging trends of mobile electronics. With multifunctionality
of mobile electronics, it is possible to communicate, compute
and entertain at any time and at any place. People also want
to use their devices more frequently and longer without any
interruption.
This era requires new energy source that can last longer with
single charge and be exchangeable as well as cordless. The
Li-ion battery is not that optimistic to meet these requirements,
especially in considering mobility, high power and longer
operating time of mobile electronics.
Then, what could be the practical alternative for the Li-ion
battery. The mobile fuel cell is the only option to satisfy
these all requirements and can be innovator of new electronic
devices. Along with this, the mobile fuel cell will diversify
its application and make bigger pie of the mobile energy market.
Samsung has a vision of a global leader in the digital convergence
era. To achieve this, Samsung put a high value on the energy
business above anything else. Based on the state-of-the art
technologies acquired from Li-ion battery R&D and business,
Samsung is making major technological breakthroughs in mobile
fuel cell technologies. Combining with our pioneering mobile
electronics initiatives, Samsung will be competent to open
the emerging mobile market and make it a huge business.
For the mobile fuel cell business to be successful and to
be competitive against advanced Li-ion battery which is in
saturation economically and technologically, there are still
many challenges to be overcome. However, Samsung will make
efforts for the mobile fuel cell business to go beyond the
chasm and to enter the mainstream of the next generation energy
source for mobile electronics.
Samsung will continue to lead future energy technologies,
and facilitate the mobile fuel cell commercialization with
strategic partners.
