Dear Reader,
a special exhibition area at HANNOVER FAIR 2001
in April called Hydrogen and Fuel Cells was a
direct hit with the mass media and also with German
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. A visual focal point
was the hydrogen-powered Mercedes Necar. Also, the
website https://www.hydrogenambassadors.com
aimed to create a community for the organizers,
exhibitors and visitors.
The area´s organizer Arno A. Evers from
Starnberg in Germany, who started the fuel cell
exhibition back in 1995, told me: We see
our presentation as an important platform for
information. A managing director is often prepared
to explain to a high school teacher how a fuel
cell works, without trying to sell him a plant.
You need multiplicators, who for instance tell
their friends or people in school or at home what
they saw at our presentation. That is why I advise
our exhibitors not to use video presentations
or plasma screens.

One has to react to the question of the visitors
individually." No doubt about it, hydrogen
powered fuel cells are on the up. But where Mr
Evers is obviously correct, is that the success
of new technology will increasingly be linked
to the ability of exhibiting companies to educate
potential buyers as to its merits and uses. Of
course, everyone thinks themselves professional.
But cuttingedge technology is becoming so specialized
and segmented that it is hardly possible to keep
up to date in the normal course of work. That`s
where conference sessions, forums for experts
and many other forums of education come in. [...]
The get-up of exhibitions is changing; they are
becoming more and more important as focal points
not only for showcasing products but also for
the creation of a community that revolves around
what is often termed ´content´. The
exhibition business will definitely see a strengthening
of the ´content´ part of a show.
