Live
video conference with the Antarctic: Dr. Gerd König-Langlo
from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research
presents the chat into the ice In front of the model of the
german research station "Neumayer" Dr. Gerd König-Langlo explains
"obsen": This special word created by the overwinterers means:
to go to the observatories.
In front of a model of the German "Neumayer" Research Station
Dr. Gerd König-Langlo explains the meaning of "obsen", a word
created by overwintering scientists meaning "to do a round
of the observatories".
Motto 2:
Brilliant prospects for science with the "Free Electron Laser".
Find out about one of the Worldwide EXPO Projects.
Realization:
Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron
http://www.desy.de/
Dr.
Axel Matthiesen from DESY, the German Electron Synchrotron,
explains the function of an accelerator module.

Walter from the Arno A. Evers FAIR-PR Team talking to Heiner
Westermann (centre) and Dr. Josef Feldhaus (right).
Dr.
Josef Feldhaus: "Brilliant prospects for science with the
"Free Electron Laser".

3:
Go on a journey into the human skull and, with the help of
tomography, look into the thinking brain.
Realization:
Research Centre Jülich
http://www.fz-juelich.de/
Richard
Patzak from the Research Centre Jülich gives EXPO visitors
a look straight into the living brain with the use of magnetic
resonance tomography.
Richard
Patzak: "Brain research has made decisive progress on the
way towards the transparent brain. "

Bacteria polish off mercury. Learn how this toxic substance
can be removed from waste water.

Bacteria
- man's friend and foe: Irene Wagner-Döbler and Thomas Gazlig
from the National Research Centre for Biotechnology take a
seat on a million-times scale-up model of a bacteria, while
presenter Ulrich Walter sits down on a harmless salmonella.
Frau
Wagner-Döbler explains to EXPO visitors how a bioreactor decontaminates
surface waters with the aid of bacteria which can render mercury
harmless.
The GBF carries out intensive research to enable the use of
genetically altered bacteria to vaccinate against infectious
diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV.

5:
Experiencing
Genetic Research - the Transparent Laboratory
Realization:
Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine
Prof.
Detlev Ganten, chairman of the Helmholtz Association and Head
of the Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in
Berlin, presents the Transparent Laboratory, a project run
by the Biomedical Research Campus Berlin Buch Ltd., to Go
Basic visitors.
At the
Transparent Laboratory pupils, teachers, students and members
of the public can learn about gene technology and genetic
research. For example, visitors can extract DNA from a tomato
or determine their own genetic fingerprint. The institute
aims to bridge the gap between science and the public, break
down mutual reservations and above all, get a dialogue going.
Prof.
Ganten and his colleagues Erik A. Werner and Dr. Anna Maria
Aguirre-Arteta want to promote public acceptance through transparency
in research and fruitful discussion.
