Promotion of interdisciplinary co-operation: Collaborative
Research Centres bundle scientific competence in German universities

Dr. Andreas
Archut (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), Katharina Kadel
(Rector's Conference), and Dr. Jochen Holzkamp (Science Council)
reported on Collaborative Research Centres. Since 1968 Collaborative
Research Centres bring together researchers from different
institutes, disciplines and faculties to co-operate on joint
projects in an interdisciplinary manner. Presently, there
are 300 Collaborative Research Centres in Germany that are
involved in basic research.
Dr. Archut
explains how Collaborative Research Centres function using
a centre at the University of Bremen as an example, that deals
with climate history (in the background: the research vessel
"Meteor")
Dr. Holzkamp
describes the tasks of the Science Council. It consults the
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft when new Collaborative Research
Centres are set up. A central aim of these centres is to support
young scientists.
