Theme:
De-mystifying technology
Motto:
Identifying, respecting and applying existing traditional
knowledge and skills - found in semi-literate and unemployed
rural youth in India - for the development of their quality
of life.
Realization:
Barefoot College, India
Since
29 years the Indian Barefoot College finds unconventional
solutions for daily-life problems for the poor in the rural
areas of Rajasthan, report Mrs. Ratandevi and Mr. Tejaran.
Puppet-shows
in the villages can help to spread the knowledge and the skills
needed to solve their usual problems.
Puppet-shows
are a traditional way of communication in rural areas in India
which is being revived by the Barefoot College.
Mrs.
Ratandevi gives an example for a project at the Barefoot College:
250 unemployed young people run 150 evening schools for about
3000 children living in the streets without a possibility
to go to school at daytime.
Farmers
who can neither read nor write have built up a big college-campus.
It has got a storage system for 400.000 liters of raining
water and solar panels for sufficient energy supply, says
Mrs. Ratandevi.
